Coordinator for the Program on Right to Adequate Food Accountability

The position is full time and based at FIAN International Secretariat in Heidelberg, Germany.

FIAN is an international human rights organization that has advocated for the realization of the right to adequate food and nutrition for nearly 30 years. FIAN’s mission is to expose violations and abuses of people’s right to food wherever they may occur. We stand up against unjust and oppressive practices that prevent people from feeding themselves, their families and communities.

FIAN’s program on the     human right to adequate food and nutrition accountability is one of the five priorities established by the FIAN International Strategic Plan 2011-2016 that embraces several action lines of the organization, including monitoring of public policies, promotion of     justiciability and     extraterritorial obligations, inclusive     governance of the global food system and     global networking to strengthen right to adequate food accountability worldwide.

Duties:

  • Coordinate FIAN’s program on right to adequate food accountability at the international secretariat
  • Coordinate FIAN’s work on human rights based monitoring of public policies that affect the realization of the right to adequate food and nutrition, including through the support to the Right to Food and Nutrition Watch
  •  Support the facilitation of the Global Network for the Right to Food and Nutrition, under the supervision of the FIAN International Secretary General and the guidance of Coordination Committee of the Network
  •  Contribute to the development of FIAN’s conceptual work in the field of right to adequate food and nutrition accountability, human rights based monitoring, justiciability, extraterritorial obligations,  global governance of food and nutrition regimes, criminalization of social movements and human rights defenders
  •  Draft reports, strategies, position papers, articles etc. on subjects that fall under the program
  •  Contribute to FIAN’s advocacy work at international level, including international organizations and human rights bodies, through active participation in the Civil Society Mechanism for  the UN Committee on World Food Security (Rome), and in the CFS itself,  and through active collaboration with the FIAN IS office in Geneva  towards the UN Human Rights System. (Geneva and New York)
  • Coordinate and supervise the projects related to the right to adequate food accountability program
  • Contribute to overall organizational priorities, including project acquisition

Profile:

The ideal candidate is someone who has substantial knowledge of the field of human rights, in particular the right to food and nutrition, experience with global networking processes, human rights based monitoring and accountability. The candidate should have strong interpersonal, communication and coordination skills, as well as work well in collaborative processes, especially between international organizations, networks and grassroots groups.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Human Rights, Political Science, Food and Nutrition, Social Studies, Law or related field-or equivalent experience
  • At least 10 years of work experience , out of which a  minimum of 5 years of experience in NGO’s work, in the area of human rights and/or issues related to the right to food and nutrition
  • Strong analytical skills. Experience in policy and human rights analysis is highly appreciated
  • Extensive experience with project management
  • Professional experience in working with women´s rights and gender is welcome.
  •  Strong facilitation and diplomatic skills to work with a wide range of civil society groups, particularly grassroots groups and social movements from all regions of the world, as well as international organizations and institutions; capacity to reach out and coordinate with diverse human rights organizations, social movements’ activists, academics and government officials
  • Established relationships within the global human rights movement, particularly grassroots, national, and regional human rights organizations working on issues related to human rights accountability are an asset
  • Fluency in English, as well as French or Spanish. Additional languages are an asset
