Campaigns Director

We are seeking a seasoned Campaigns Director to lead and manage a diverse suite of programs
and campaigns in support of our mission. The successful candidate will be well-versed in river
and hydropower issues, and have proven experience in planning and implementing
environmental and/or economic justice campaigns in an international context. S/he will have
demonstrated success in developing strategies, raising resources and managing budgets and
personnel in support of programmatic goals.
We envision the position of Campaigns Director to be based in our Berkeley, California office in
the David Brower Center. We are willing to consider candidates based in one of our regional
offices (Brasilia, Pretoria, Mumbai/Delhi, and Bangkok).
Primary Responsibilities:
-Campaign Leadership: Provide strategic direction and effectively coordinate staff teams
and partner groups to meet the objectives of a subset of International Rivers’ campaigns.
Work collaboratively with senior program staff to ensure coherence and complementarity
between and within International Rivers’ diverse programs and campaigns.
-Program Supervision: Provide supervision and support of two or three regional offices,
including managing a diverse staff, developing and evaluating annual program plans,
overseeing program budgets, liaising between regional teams and headquarters staff, and
ensuring that programs are well-coordinated across regions.
-Fundraising: Collaborate with program and fund development staff in raising funds for
International Rivers’ programs, including developing donor prospects, managing funder
relationships, and creating high-quality content for proposals and reports.
-Communications: Ensure effective communications in support of specific
organizational, program and campaign objectives, which may include editing copy,
nurturing media contacts, and working with key staff to develop program and campaign
communications plans. Act as an organizational spokesperson for media outreach; help
write and/or edit reports, fact sheets, and World Rivers Review articles.
-Organizational Management: Contribute to the overall management of the organization
as a member of the Management Team, which is responsible for developing the annual
organizational budget, overseeing employment policies and procedures, supporting
effective operations and governance, and other organizational-wide issues.
Required Qualifications:
-At least eight years of experience and progressive leadership with campaigns and/or
advocacy-based programs in the fields of environmental protection, human rights, and/or
economic justice.
-At least five years of management and supervisory experience in non-profit
organizations.
-Technical or policy experience in river protection, energy or water sector planning,
climate policy and/or development economics.
-Deep knowledge of the cultures of and environmental issues in the Amazon basin, Africa,
Southeast Asia or other regions of International Rivers’ focus.
-Demonstrated ability to raise funding for programs, including establishing and nurturing
relationships with funding partners, and crafting compelling funding proposals and
progress reports.
-Experience in working in international civil society networks and track record of
developing partnerships and/or coalitions to win campaigns.
-Fluency in English; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to collaborate
effectively across cultures and time zones.
-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience required; graduate degree(s) a
plus.
-Willingness and ability to travel internationally with some frequency.
Desired Qualifications:
-Proficiency in Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, French or other language within the regions
where International Rivers operates (e.g. Hindi, Mandarin).
-Passion for rivers.
-Significant time spent living and working in one or more of the countries and cultures
where International Rivers operates.
-Experience with cross-cutting issues within our programs, such as sustainable energy
solutions, international law, finance of energy and infrastructure projects, community
organizing, climate policy, and/or river basin management.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. In addition, International Rivers offers excellent
